#182: Never underestimate the power of dreams and the influence of the human spirit.
Hello Venturer,
This week, I was reminded of one of the first times pursuing writing as a career remotely crossed my mind. I was tasked to write a feature story for a school assignment. And I chose to write a narrative non-fiction combining ode, recounting a poignant incident: the tragic loss of 26 Nigerian women who died crossing the Mediterranean Sea. They were trying to reach Europe from Libya, hoping for a better life, but their boat capsized, and they drowned. The story, albeit tragic, serves as a stark reminder of the desperate measures people take in pursuit of a more promising future.
In recent years, Africa has witnessed a surge of migration within and outside the continent, driven by various factors such as conflict, economic challenges, and political instability. In 2022, the UK's legal net migration hit a record 745,000. Nigeria accounted for 25% of that increase. While this migration trend takes on a more legal face with the colloquial term the "Japa wave," the impact carries on like a thread.
This week, we explore the UK's new visa rules and their impact on Africa's migration patterns.
