#206: Nigeria provides electricity to neighbouring countries with reliable power systems despite not having a consistent supply.
Hello Venturer,
I have always found it surprising that Nigeria exports electricity to neighbouring nations. Based on data from the International Trade Administration, Benin relies on Nigeria for 72% of its electricity supply mix, while Togo receives approximately 47%, and Niger depends on Nigeria for 87%.
The math has never made sense to me. Nigeria provides electricity to countries with reliable power systems despite not having a consistent supply. This irony is a bane to Nigerians. Yet, Nigeria's shortfall in domestic electricity distribution exceeds the amount it exports, which is 6% of its total electricity generation. I am curious about where the other 94% of the generated electricity is.
In an unexpected twist, the Nigerian power sector's regulatory body, NERC, has recently instructed the System Operator to restrict electricity supply to international customers due to a growing debt crisis.
This week, we examine the possibility of a sustainable solution to ensure Nigeria's domestic energy security and ongoing regional cooperation.
